Everything to know about palying card finishes

What are card finishes on playing cards, and how do they differ?

A card finish is the surface texture and coating applied to a deck of playing cards. It affects how the cards feel, slide, spread, fan, and handle while performing cardistry.

Most modern playing cards such as Vestra, have a coated surface that reduces friction and helps the cards glide more smoothly. The finish can make a deck feel more slippery, more controlled, softer, stiffer, smoother, or more textured depending on the stock and coating used.

Common card finishes:

  • Air-cushion finish: A textured finish with tiny dimples that help trap air between cards, making them easier to spread and fan.
  • Smooth finish: A flatter surface with less texture, often giving the cards a cleaner but sometimes less airy feel.
  • Linen finish: A textured finish with a woven-like pattern, often used to create a more tactile handling experience.
  • Performance finishes: Some cardistry and magic decks use custom finishes designed for smoother handling, longer durability, or better control such as the Butter varnish.

For cardistry, the best card finish depends on personal preference. Some cardists prefer a smooth and fast deck for fans and spreads (Linen finish), while others prefer a slightly grippier finish for packet cuts and controlled flourishes.
